India Intensifies Efforts to Save Nurse Nimisha Priya from Death Penalty in Yemen

India is actively working behind the scenes to help secure the release of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse currently facing the death penalty in Yemen. According to officials, the government has been in direct contact with local authorities in Yemen's capital, Sana’a, as well as reaching out to friendly countries in the region that may be able to assist.

Nimisha, originally from Kerala, has been on death row for several years after being convicted in a criminal case under the Houthi-controlled legal system. With limited diplomatic presence in Yemen due to the ongoing conflict, India’s efforts have focused on using diplomatic backchannels and engaging with countries that have leverage over the Houthis.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that it is closely monitoring the case and has made representations not only to the de facto Houthi administration in Sana’a, but also to governments in nearby nations such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. These countries, given their influence in the region and involvement in Yemen’s political landscape, are seen as key players in building pressure for a humanitarian resolution.

Government sources emphasized that India is trying every possible route to ensure Nimisha’s safety and to seek a legal or diplomatic remedy that could spare her life. While there’s no Indian embassy operating in Yemen due to the war, diplomatic outreach continues through parallel efforts in countries that have maintained ties with the Houthis or have a presence on the ground.

Nimisha’s case has sparked widespread concern and emotional appeals from her family and supporters in India, many of whom have been campaigning for her release. Civil society groups and legal aid organizations have also urged the government to intensify its efforts, suggesting the use of diplomatic negotiations or even clemency pleas.

In recent weeks, India’s engagement on this front has quietly increased, reflecting both the humanitarian concern for Nimisha and the government’s broader commitment to protect Indian nationals abroad—even in complex and dangerous geopolitical situations.

While the outcome remains uncertain, Indian officials say they remain hopeful that ongoing efforts, combined with support from influential regional allies, could lead to a breakthrough. For now, the focus remains on keeping communication channels open, working diplomatically, and supporting Nimisha’s family during this incredibly difficult time.
