At the BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong case for giving developing nations a bigger voice in shaping global decisions. Addressing leaders from fellow emerging economies, Modi highlighted how much of the world’s population remains underrepresented in international institutions that were designed decades ago.

Speaking during a session on peace, security, and global governance reform, Modi emphasized that two-thirds of the world's people still don’t have a real seat at the table. “This isn’t just about fairness—it’s about making these institutions more credible and effective,” he said. He criticized the outdated nature of global bodies that have failed to deliver meaningful solutions to today’s challenges and pointed out how the Global South often faces double standards.

Modi also applauded the expansion of BRICS, saying it proves the group is adapting to the changing world. Indonesia’s inclusion as a new BRICS member was welcomed by the leaders, alongside the broader embrace of partner countries like Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Nigeria, and others.

The summit’s final declaration echoed many of India’s key priorities. It strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam and reaffirmed BRICS’ unified stance against terrorism—especially cross-border terrorism. The leaders pushed for a swift conclusion of the long-pending UN treaty on terrorism, known as the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

On global conflicts, the declaration criticized recent joint military actions by Israel and the U.S. against Iran, calling them violations of international law and the UN Charter. It also expressed grave concern over attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Importantly, the document reflected growing support for giving emerging powers a bigger role in the UN. Russia and China, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, backed Brazil and India’s ambitions to have a greater say in how the global body is run.

The summit ended with a call to strengthen cooperation and dialogue among developing countries, signaling BRICS’ ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive and balanced world order.
