"Thailand-Cambodia Border Clashes Leave 11 Dead in Worst Violence in Years"

Border Tensions Explode: 11 Killed as Thailand and Cambodia Clash in Deadliest Fight in Years

What began as a simmering border dispute has now boiled over into one of the most intense confrontations between Thailand and Cambodia in years. On Thursday, deadly clashes broke out along several parts of the two countries’ shared frontier, leaving 11 people dead and dozens injured. Most of those killed were civilians, highlighting the human cost of the long-running territorial tensions.

The violence erupted after a landmine explosion on Wednesday wounded five Thai soldiers. The Thai government blamed Cambodia for planting the mines in a zone that had previously been agreed upon as safe. Cambodia denied this, pointing to the decades of leftover mines from past conflicts. But the blast was enough to send relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbors into freefall. In a swift and dramatic response, Thailand withdrew its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelled Cambodia’s envoy. Cambodia followed suit the next day, recalling all its embassy staff from Bangkok.

On Thursday morning, fighting erupted near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple, which lies along Thailand’s Surin province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province. Video footage from the Thai side showed villagers abandoning their homes in panic, running to concrete shelters as explosions rang out nearby. By midday, gunfire, artillery shells, and even airstrikes were reported from both sides, with combat ongoing in at least six different spots along the border.

According to the Thai Defence Ministry, the spark for the firefight came when a drone was spotted, followed by a group of six armed Cambodian soldiers moving toward Thai positions. Thai troops claimed they attempted to de-escalate by shouting warnings, but were met with gunfire. Cambodia, however, accused Thailand of launching the drone first and initiating the attack, saying their forces only responded in self-defence after what they described as an unprovoked violation of their territory.

As the situation escalated, Thailand sealed off all land border crossings and urged its citizens in Cambodia to return home immediately. Meanwhile, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet appealed to the United Nations, writing to the current president of the UN Security Council to request an emergency session. “We must stop Thailand’s aggression,” he wrote.

Both sides traded accusations throughout the day. Thailand’s foreign ministry accused Cambodian forces of targeting civilian infrastructure, including a hospital. Cambodia countered by claiming that Thai fighter jets had bombed roads near the historic Preah Vihear temple—an area that has seen deadly clashes in the past.

Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed that 11 people had died, including 10 civilians and one soldier. He added that 28 others had been injured, mostly non-combatants.

The border between Thailand and Cambodia stretches for roughly 800 kilometers and has been a flashpoint for generations. Disputes over land, especially near ancient temple sites like Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom, have caused repeated skirmishes. But Thursday’s clashes represent a dangerous escalation, involving not only ground troops and artillery but also air power—something rarely seen in past incidents.

While both countries have navigated similar tensions in the past, the scale and intensity of this latest conflict mark a worrying shift. And with diplomatic ties now severely downgraded and military activity still ongoing, regional observers fear this may be more than just a brief flare-up.

The hope now is that international diplomacy—possibly through ASEAN or the UN—can bring both sides back to the negotiating table. For the thousands of civilians living near the border, peace can’t come soon enough.
