Tragedy in the Hills: Flash Floods Wreak Havoc in Uttarkashi's Dharali Town
In a heartbreaking turn of events, flash floods triggered by relentless rain swept through the picturesque hill town of Dharali in Uttarkashi on Tuesday afternoon, claiming at least four lives and leaving dozens missing. The disaster unfolded in mere moments, catching both residents and tourists off guard.
Nestled at an altitude of 8,600 feet, Dharali witnessed a terrifying surge of water from the Kheer Ganga river that tore through buildings, hotels, and homes—leaving behind a trail of destruction. Videos captured by locals show massive waves barreling down the slopes, devouring everything in their path. Screams of warning echoed through the narrow alleys as people ran for their lives.
Within minutes, what used to be a vibrant market area turned into a sludge-filled wasteland. Authorities estimate that around 25 buildings, including guest houses and homes, were completely wiped out. Roughly 60-70 people are feared missing or trapped under debris, including nine Army personnel.
Rescue efforts began almost immediately, with the Army managing to pull out 20 people within the first three hours. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are working around the clock, despite poor weather and challenging terrain. So far, over 120 individuals have been rescued and treated.
Dharali isn’t the only place affected. Sukhi Top, another tourist destination nearby, also reported a rapid rise in water levels due to heavy rain. Thankfully, no casualties were reported from there.
Relief camps have been set up for the displaced, and hospitals have been directed to stay on high alert, with separate wings dedicated to treating the injured. Medical teams are ready with emergency supplies, including oxygen and essential medicines.
The district administration has taken urgent measures, including shutting down schools in the region for July 6. People living near rivers in areas like Chilyanisaur, Bhatwari, and Dunda have been asked to evacuate as a precaution. All trekking activities in Uttarkashi have been suspended until further notice.
Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and assured that rescue and relief operations are being carried out at full speed. He is in constant touch with officials and monitoring the situation closely. Both the Prime Minister and Home Minister have also extended their support to the state, promising all necessary help from the central government.
This natural disaster is a grim reminder of how fragile life is in the mountains, especially during the monsoon. Our thoughts are with those who’ve lost their loved ones and those still waiting to be found. Stay safe, and if you’re in the region, please follow all safety advisories and stay away from riverbanks.
