Operation Mahadev: Terrorist Tech Reveals Pakistan Link in Pahalgam Attack via LoRa Devices and NADRA IDs

Operation Mahadev Uncovers Terrorist Tech Trail: Phones, LoRa Sets Link Pahalgam Attackers to Pakistan

In the aftermath of Operation Mahadev, Indian security forces are beginning to piece together crucial evidence from the terrorists neutralized in the Pahalgam region. The operation, which led to the elimination of heavily armed militants, has now become the center of a deeper investigation — one that could potentially expose direct links to Pakistan.

Sources in the security establishment say that three mobile phones and two LoRa (Long Range) communication devices recovered from the site are turning out to be goldmines of intelligence. These devices are now under detailed forensic scrutiny by the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), India’s premier tech intelligence unit. Early findings suggest the presence of photographs and details of two Pakistani NADRA cards, revealing possible identities of the infiltrators.

For the uninitiated, NADRA cards are the computerized national ID cards issued by the National Database and Registration Authority of Pakistan — essentially the country’s equivalent of an Aadhaar card. The appearance of such documents strongly hints at a cross-border terror operation planned and supported from Pakistani soil.

Besides digital evidence, the list of materials recovered from the terrorists paints a picture of long-term planning and self-sufficiency: a GoPro harness, solar chargers, power banks, multiple mobile chargers, sewing kits, dry rations, a stove, medicines, and even a generous stash of tea. Notably, two Aadhaar cards were also recovered, issued in the names of local residents from Ganderbal and Srinagar. Intelligence sources believe these were either fake or obtained through overground workers (OGWs)—local sympathizers who aid infiltrators with logistics, documents, and safe passage.

The LoRa communication sets, in particular, have raised red flags within the intelligence community. Unlike satellite phones — which are easier to track or intercept — LoRa devices work through low-power, long-range radio frequencies and don’t rely on mobile networks or internet. They’re not only harder to detect, but can also support encrypted communication, making them a preferred tool for cross-border operatives and handlers.

LoRa sets are increasingly becoming a staple in the toolkit of infiltrators, especially in Jammu & Kashmir’s remote and mountainous terrain. These devices have previously been recovered from militants involved in deadly attacks in the Poonch-Rajouri sector, where over 50 Indian Army personnel have lost their lives in recent years. Intelligence officials believe the LoRa sets are part of a broader communication network run by Pakistan-based handlers, used to coordinate infiltrations and attacks without leaving behind digital footprints.

While messages sent via LoRa can’t be easily intercepted, Indian agencies do have ways of detecting when and where the device is active — albeit with a 3–5 km location margin, which complicates precision tracking in dense forests and rugged landscapes.

What’s clear, however, is that the digital evidence retrieved from the attackers is already pointing toward local support structures, including contacts saved in the phones, which may lead to arrests of sympathizers or facilitators operating within the Valley. These findings, if fully verified, could become a strong diplomatic tool in India’s ongoing efforts to internationally isolate Pakistan on the issue of cross-border terrorism.

As the investigation unfolds, Operation Mahadev is not just being seen as a tactical win on the ground, but also as a significant intelligence breakthrough—one that could expose a much larger web of terror logistics stretching from the forests of Kashmir to handlers across the border.
