India Looks Beyond West Asia for Oil Amid Rising Regional Tensions

India Looks Beyond West Asia for Oil Amid Rising Regional Tensions

New Delhi – With tensions mounting in West Asia and fresh concerns over the security of key shipping lanes, India is set to increase its crude oil imports from alternative regions including Russia, West Africa, the United States, and Latin America, industry sources say.

The recent escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict, coupled with Tehran’s warning that it may shut down the Strait of Hormuz — a vital passage for global oil shipments — has raised red flags for Indian energy planners. In response, refiners are moving quickly to diversify supply sources and reduce dependence on oil from the volatile Persian Gulf region.

According to experts, India has already been rebalancing its oil sourcing strategy over the past year, with Russian crude steadily gaining a larger share of the country’s import basket. This shift, initially driven by price advantages, is now being reinforced by growing geopolitical risk in West Asia.

“Indian refiners are preparing for any disruption in Persian Gulf flows,” said an industry official familiar with the matter. “Supply routes from Russia, the U.S., West Africa, and Latin America are geographically insulated from the Strait of Hormuz, which makes them more reliable under current circumstances.”

The diversification also reflects a broader risk-mitigation approach as India — the world’s third-largest oil importer — navigates a complex global energy landscape. While West Asia remains a key supplier, Indian officials are clearly working to ensure that any sudden interruption won’t catch the country off guard.

“Energy security is not just about price anymore,” said an analyst with a New Delhi-based energy think tank. “It’s also about logistics, routes, and geopolitical buffers — and India is making that shift.”

As global markets watch the situation in the Persian Gulf closely, India’s pivot to more diversified oil sourcing could serve as a model for other nations looking to balance affordability with resilience.
