"Delhi Fights Back: Anti-Smog Guns, EV Buses & Cloud Seeding to Tackle Air Pollution"

Delhi’s Bold New Push to Breathe Easier: Anti-Smog Guns, Cloud Seeding & Cleaner Roads

Air pollution has long been one of Delhi’s biggest challenges. Every winter, smog blankets the city, schools shut down, and masks become part of daily life—not just because of viruses, but because of the air itself. But now, the Delhi government is stepping up its game in a big way, outlining a range of new and existing efforts aimed at clearing the skies.

In a fresh petition to the Supreme Court dated July 24, the Delhi government has asked for a review of the blanket ban on older vehicles in the National Capital Region (NCR), citing a more scientific and data-backed approach to fighting air pollution. Rather than targeting vehicles based on age alone, the government is urging the need for a smarter system—one that evaluates a vehicle’s actual emissions and overall condition.

What’s interesting is the long list of proactive steps the city claims to have already taken or is planning to roll out soon. Among the highlights: anti-smog guns installed at pollution hotspots, road-sweeping machines that reduce dust, mist sprayers to settle particulate matter, and even cloud seeding—yes, an effort to make it rain artificially to clean the air. These might sound like scenes from a futuristic city, but Delhi is betting on tech and innovation to make a visible difference.

The government also emphasized infrastructure changes. A major road redevelopment project is underway to reduce congestion, one of the biggest contributors to vehicular emissions. Fewer traffic jams could mean smoother rides—and cleaner air.

Backing its claims, the Delhi government pointed to a notable increase in the number of “good air quality” days. In 2018, the city had 159 good days; in 2024, that number has jumped to 209. That includes 106 good days just between January 1 and July 11 this year. While that doesn’t mean the battle is won, it does suggest the tide may be turning.

Efforts to clean up transportation are also getting a serious boost. Stricter checks for Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC) are now being enforced at petrol pumps. Old vehicles are being encouraged to undergo retrofitting with emission-reducing components. And in a big move towards sustainable mobility, Delhi is pushing for a major shift to electric vehicles—especially for public transport and last-mile connectivity.

The numbers speak for themselves. Of the 6,638 buses currently running in Delhi, 738 cluster buses and 2,210 DTC buses are already electric. That’s over 2,900 electric buses on the road—quiet, emission-free, and a big step in the right direction.

In many ways, Delhi is trying to rewrite its reputation—from the smog capital to a model for urban environmental reform. It won’t be easy, and the results may not be instant. But with innovation, data, and public accountability leading the way, there’s cautious optimism that cleaner air might no longer be a distant dream—but a reachable goal.
