"Air India AI 171 Crash: Interim Compensation Paid to Families of Victims"

Air India AI 171 Crash: Families of Victims Begin Receiving Interim Compensation

The devastating crash of Air India flight AI 171 on June 12, 2024, left a deep scar on the nation. As families continue to grieve and seek closure, the airline has begun distributing interim compensation to the next of kin of those who tragically lost their lives in the incident.

To date, Air India has released interim compensation of ₹25 lakh each to the families of 147 out of the 229 passengers who died onboard, as well as to the families of 19 individuals who were killed on the ground when the aircraft crashed. These payments are a part of the immediate support being extended to the victims’ families and will be adjusted against the final compensation amount, once that is determined.

The crash, involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, is now considered the deadliest aviation disaster in India in over 40 years. The total death toll reached 260, which includes 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. The tragedy has shocked the entire country and raised serious concerns about aviation safety, operational protocols, and disaster response mechanisms.

Air India stated in its latest update that compensation is being disbursed progressively as documents are verified. So far, documents for 52 additional victims have been cleared, and their families are expected to receive their interim payments soon.

Alongside this, the airline’s parent company, Tata Sons, had earlier pledged an ex-gratia payment of ₹1 crore to the family of each deceased passenger, separate from the official compensation being processed through legal and insurance channels. This gesture was widely seen as a sign of responsibility and compassion from the Tata Group, which owns Air India.

While the interim compensation offers some relief to families, legal experts point out that the process of final compensation can be complex and time-consuming. It often depends on the nature of the flight (domestic or international), applicable aviation laws, insurance policies, and liability clauses. In most cases, airlines carry liability insurance to cover such tragic events, ensuring that victims or their families receive due compensation regardless of the cause of the accident.

For the families, though, no amount of money can replace the lives lost. Many are still waiting for answers—about what went wrong, who is accountable, and how such a tragedy could be prevented in the future. Investigations are ongoing, and aviation regulators are working closely with international agencies to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the crash.

In the meantime, support from civil society, NGOs, and government bodies continues to pour in. Psychological counseling, legal aid, and logistical support are being offered to the grieving families, many of whom are still struggling to come to terms with their loss.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the immense responsibility airlines carry. It also underscores the need for better preparedness, more stringent safety checks, and transparent communication in the aftermath of such disasters.

As compensation efforts continue and investigations move forward, the nation watches closely, hoping that justice will be served and that such a tragedy will never repeat itself.
