Tragedy at Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar: Eight Killed, 30 Injured in Stampede
What was meant to be a day of devotion turned into a nightmare for hundreds of pilgrims at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar on Sunday morning. A devastating stampede claimed the lives of eight people and left at least 30 others injured after panic swept through the crowd gathered on the temple’s stairway. The temple, perched 1,770 feet above sea level in the scenic Sivalik Hills, draws thousands of devotees every day, especially during the religious season.
The tragedy unfolded around 9 a.m. when a rumour about a snapped electric wire sparked chaos among the gathered pilgrims. Fearing electrocution, many began pushing and shoving, trying desperately to escape the congested stairway. With people packed tightly between barricades and many carrying children, the panic escalated quickly, and in the confusion, some devotees lost their footing and were trampled in the rush.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes—children crying, elderly people collapsing, and helpless devotees gasping for air with no space to move. Some were seen trying to climb nearby walls to escape the crush, while others, in a desperate attempt to get out, ran over fellow devotees. The narrow passage became a trap as people continued to pour in from all directions, unaware of the chaos unfolding ahead.
In the aftermath, the stairway was littered with slippers, prayer items, and personal belongings—painful reminders of the panic that gripped the area. Rescue teams from the police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) arrived quickly, working tirelessly for hours to bring the situation under control and help the injured.
The victims, aged between 12 and 60, hailed from different parts of northern India including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand. Families mourning their loved ones were seen gathered outside hospitals, trying to come to terms with the loss.
Expressing deep sorrow, the Chief Minister announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 for each injured person. He personally visited the injured at a local hospital, assuring them of full support. The Prime Minister also extended his condolences and wished for the speedy recovery of those hurt in the incident.
To determine what went wrong and to ensure accountability, the District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial inquiry. A Sub-Divisional Magistrate will lead the investigation and is expected to submit a report within 15 days.
The temple trust has also stepped in to support the affected families, promising ₹5 lakh in aid to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to those who were injured.
This tragedy serves as a harsh reminder of the urgent need for better crowd control measures and infrastructure at pilgrimage sites. As grieving families try to pick up the pieces, the community is left to reflect on how such sacred spaces can be made safer for all who visit them in search of peace and devotion.
