FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral following allegations of racial abuse made by Real Madrid and Germany defender Antonio Rüdiger during the Club World Cup final in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The incident occurred in the closing minutes of Madrid’s 3-1 victory on Sunday, when tensions flared between Rüdiger and Cabral. The Real Madrid defender later alleged that he was subjected to racist abuse during the exchange.

In a statement released on Wednesday, FIFA confirmed the launch of an official investigation.

“Following an assessment of the match reports, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against Pachuca player Gustavo Cabral in relation to the incident involving him and Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger,” the global football body said.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with calls for strong action against racism in football. FIFA has reaffirmed its commitment to combating discrimination in all forms, stating it will handle the matter with “zero tolerance.”

Neither Cabral nor Pachuca have publicly responded to the allegations as of Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, Real Madrid has expressed full support for Rüdiger and welcomed the disciplinary move.

The Club World Cup final, which saw Madrid claim another international title, has now become the latest flashpoint in football’s ongoing battle against racism on and off the pitch.
