India
has joined fellow BRICS nations in voicing strong opposition to recent military
strikes on Iran, calling the attacks a serious breach of international law and
the principles of the United Nations Charter. The joint statement, issued by
the BRICS grouping, expressed "grave concern" over the situation,
with India standing firmly alongside its partners in calling for respect for
Iran’s sovereignty.
The
condemnation follows a series of military actions reportedly carried out by
Israel and the United States against Iranian targets since June 13, sparking
international criticism and raising tensions across the region.
Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the upcoming BRICS summit in Rio
de Janeiro on July 5-6, where the issue is likely to figure prominently in
discussions. His presence will signal India’s ongoing commitment to the BRICS
platform at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty.
In
response to the show of support, Iran expressed its appreciation toward India,
thanking its citizens, political leaders, and institutions for their
solidarity. In a statement, Iranian officials conveyed their gratitude to what
they described as India’s “freedom-loving” people who stood with Tehran during
this critical time.
The
BRICS bloc — comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and several
newly inducted members — has increasingly positioned itself as a voice for
multipolar diplomacy, often challenging the Western-dominated global narrative.
India’s
alignment with the BRICS statement signals its broader foreign policy approach:
upholding international law while seeking a balanced and independent stance in
global conflicts.
